Review of book The Memoir Club by Laura Kalpakian

Previously I read a book called AMERICAN COOKERY by Laura Kalpakian. I loved that book so much that when I went to the library last week I searched for other books by this author. I only found one. It is called THE MEMOIR CLUB and I finished reading it Saturday.

Although I didn’t enjoy it as much as AMERICAN COOKERY, I did like the book. This has nothing to do with the value of the book, it has to do with the fact that AMERICAN COOKERY would have a hard time finding ANY rival.

The Memoir Club is definitely a good read. It is the story of several different women from very different walks of life who take a class on memoir writing for very different reasons. This odd mixture of females, against all odds, end up being very close friends. There is a tragic theme that runs through the book, for one of the women has lost her husband and children in a plane crash. She blames herself, for she was having an affair and if not for that she would have been on that plane with them. She is a doctor at a women’s clinic and though I will not divulge the ending of the book, let’s just say that she got her wish.  The best thing about Laura Kalpakian’s writing is that she has an uncannily clear picture of the human condition and expresses it so very beautifully and honestly.
